Harvard Women’s Health Watch  reports that creating visual arts and crafts can reduce stress and promote relaxation as well as many other health related benefits.  The world renowned Mayo Clinic also advises that arts and crafts in whatever guise is good for you. The American Academy of Neurology published a study which reported that people in middle to old age were 73% less likely to develop Mild Cognitive Impairment, when they took up activities such as woodworking, ceramics, quilting and sewing!

I remember, receiving plenty of hand made gifts from my Nan, Evelyn.  She would always surprise me on my birthday or at Christmas with beautiful made scarf, dress, or crocheted dress.  A milliner by trade, she always kept herself busy and loved a challenge.  There wasn’t anything that she couldn’t or wouldn’t turn her hand too. She lived to the ripe old age of 88 and was as sharp as tack.  Living proof maybe of what the Harvard Women’s Health Watch, Mayo Clinic and the American Academy of Neurology have witnessed in their studies.

It was my Nan that taught me to sew when I was a teenager and wanted to make my own dresses…  I would save up and buy some material, then Nan and I would make some shift dresses together.  She’d show me, how to cut the material to a pattern, where to put the darts in, how to sew, hem and finish the garment so it looked pristine.  She was a great inspiration for me and a fantastic teacher.

Over the years I’ve stopped making my own clothes, but carried on sewing and using the techniques and skills my Nan taught me.  I feel in love with making patchwork quilts.  At first, they were quite simple in design, square blocks that were easy to construct.  As I got more proficient, I started to take on more complex block designs… but the fundamentals are still the same.

If you can sew in a straight line (actually, your sewing machine pretty much does this for you anyway), then you can make patchwork quilts.
